Moving and Learning Residencies were created after hearing from teachers that live demonstrations in the classrooms were so helpful in creating sustainable practices. In its debut year this program was implemented into 63 classrooms, reaching over 1,890 students. The teachers committed to teaching 3-5 minute practices four days a week with the Moving and Learning Resident teacher teaching 20-30 minutes one time a week.
What are Moving and Learning Residencies?
Each residency site selected has a Yoga Calm® Certified Youth Instructor, provided by 1000 Petals LLC, assigned for one day a week for five consecutive weeks. A 6th session occurs a month later.
The school chooses four to six classrooms to participate in this Residency.
The primary funding of these programs in both St. Paul and District 196 was through State Health Improvement Grants and Local Collaborative Time Study Grants.
For the 2015 – 2016 school year, we are working in Rosemount, Apple Valley and Eagan with 16 schools, 64 teachers and about 1920 students a week.
